The last census counted 1,508 dwellings here, and nearly every one of them a separate house. Big families cycle a loo hard all day, and a fixture working that rate wears its valves faster than a quiet one.
Our tap and toilet plumbing work takes in the full spread of cistern and pan faults, and this page narrows onto the toilet itself.

Running, Leaking and Slow-Filling Cisterns
Three parts fail most: a worn inlet valve leaves the cistern slow to fill, a tired outlet valve keeps it running, and hardened seals let it leak.
The Inlet Valve
The inlet valve refills the cistern after each flush and closes when the float reaches its level. Wear or grit in that valve slows the fill or leaves the water running nonstop. A float sitting low starves the flush the same way, because the cistern never gets to full.
The Outlet Valve
The outlet valve holds the water in the cistern between flushes. A worn washer lets it seep into the pan, so the inlet valve keeps topping up on a loop. A flush button that sticks open does the same thing.
The Seals
Seals do the quiet failing. Rubber that has sat through years of subtropical humidity goes hard long before the porcelain shows a mark, and the leak starts at whichever joint gave up first.

Repair a Toilet or Replace the Cistern
What drives the price is the failed part, whether the porcelain has split, how much room we get at the cistern and its stop tap, and how many pieces we swap. The dollar figure arrives in the fixed quote, and that comes after a plumber has seen the job.
A crack in the ceramic ends the repair conversation, because no washer seals a split cistern or pan. A loo that keeps needing fixes can also cost less over its life to swap for a new suite than to keep booking us back, and we size that call case by case.
Any new suite we fit carries WaterMark certification, which is what lets a licensed plumber install it legally, and Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) registration showing its star rating. We check both before anything reaches your place.

Silent Leaks and Sewer Smells
A leak announces itself at the cistern, around the base of the pan or at the supply joint, and each spot points to its own part.
Damp floor near the pan usually means the pan connector, its sealing ring or a fractured pan. A wet patch where the cistern sits over the pan points at the joining ring instead. Water creeping up at the supply end usually comes from the isolating tap at the wall, a mini stop, or its braided feed hose.
Drip a little food colouring into the cistern and skip flushing. Colour reaching the bowl means water is getting past the valve, and one flush afterwards clears it, because ceramic holds no stain.
A sewer smell at the loo points to the rubber rings where the pan meets its drain, gone hard or slipped out of place. We check those rings and the connector together.

Toilet Repairs for Owners and Tenants
The QBCC lists a cistern's drop valve washer, float valve washer and suction cup rubber as unregulated work, so anyone with the right know-how may renew them. The finished repair still has to meet the standards.
All remaining toilet work is minor work under the QBCC: a licensee does it, no permit applies and no Form 4 goes in. Renting? A broken or blocked toilet sits on Queensland's emergency repair list, so the tenant reports it straight away and the owner or manager arranges the fix.
The owner or manager also carries the duty of keeping the premises in good repair under the tenancy rules.
Where the QBCC gives you the washers, our tap repairs page sets out the same freedom on taps, and a full tap replacement is what a worn mixer needs. A blocked pan is drain territory, and our blocked drains page takes it.
One Cashmere wrinkle: most blocks out along Winn Road and the other acreage roads sit outside council's priority infrastructure area, so plenty run on on-site wastewater systems. A failing absorption area down slope can push effluent back up through the lowest fixture after heavy rain, and that reads like a toilet problem when it is not.

Toilet Repair Questions We Get
Call (07) 3524 0766Why won't my toilet cistern fill up?
Usually it is an inlet valve that is worn or blocked, or a float set too low; a supply tap that is only part-way open does the same thing. We test all three and quote before touching anything.
Why does my toilet keep running?
A worn outlet washer lets water past into the pan, which keeps the inlet valve refilling; or the inlet valve itself will not close. The cause is inside the cistern either way.
What causes a leak at the toilet base in my Cashmere home?
Most often the pan connector seal, a weeping supply joint or a fractured pan. Water where the cistern sits over the pan points to the joining ring instead.
Why is my toilet flush so weak?
Three things cut a flush short: a cistern sitting low on water, grit in the small holes under the rim, or a flush button that jams part-way. Any one of them leaves the bowl under-washed.
Will Unitywater cover water lost through a leaking cistern?
No, Unitywater's concealed leak adjustment leaves out leaking cisterns, taps, hot water systems and other water appliances, so the loss lands with the property owner.
